City Year New Hampshire Receives the Gift of Training

January 2011 - Dare Mighty Things, Inc. (DMT), headquartered in Portsmouth, NH is gearing up to provide City Year New Hampshire (CYNH) with custom training aimed at maintaining strong and productive relationships between corps members and students, corps members and teachers, and corps members and CYNH staff. City Year corps members are 17 - 24 year olds who volunteer for a year of full-time community service as school-based tutors and mentors, role models for the Saturday service program called Young Heroes, and as Civic Engagement Team members coordinating and planning service days in partnership with local schools, organizations, and businesses.

David Van Patten, President of DMT, serves as a board member with CYNH and is happy to volunteer the subject matter expertise of his team to help CYNH better meet the needs of local youth. DMT’s experience with youth serving organizations includes the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program, STARBASE, the Amachi Mentoring Coalition, the DeVos Urban Leadership Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Caregiver's Choice, MatchPoint, the Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program, YouthBuild USA, and LA Team Mentoring to name just a few. A solid track record with youth serving organizations and twenty years’ experience ranging from full program design and implementation to the development of research reports, business plans, program models, operational tools, and training and technical assistance programs have combined to create a the perfect opportunity for CYNH to take advantage of DMT as a local community resource.

“CYNH is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with experts in the field of training development to better serve students, schools, and communities in New Hampshire,” stated Bobby Kessling, Program and Service Director and Mary Elyse Farah, Senior Program Manager for CYNH. “This training will benefit both the service we provide in five elementary schools in Manchester and through our state-wide, Saturday service-learning program Young Heroes. In addition to the practical benefit of the training, it is a pleasure to work with an organization whose mission is so aligned with our own.” This small-scale pro-bono instructional design project offers DMT a chance to give back to the local community while offering CYNH a high quality training product. DMT Analyst, Jacqueline Bessette, has volunteered to lead this effort and will develop and provide training for corps members in January of 2011.
